Diamonds, Mine!

There is wonder in obvious gems if we dare to notice.

Poem and photo by Richard M. Barrett, a poet of Mohawk, NY

The sun rises on a freshly fallen snow

and among the long shadows cast by bare trees

a carpet of tiny, gleaming diamonds

suddenly spreads out before me,

like pieces of broken glass.

Nature’s carefully-placed snowflakes

capture the early morning rays of light

ever so perfectly into countless prisms,

with facets that dazzle,

twinkling like distant stars

in a clear night sky,

proudly standing out,

brilliantly glistening and frozen in time,

if only for these few moments;

a stunning mid-winter’s gift

that was all mine to see.
